    It's a shorty:

    Arkansas Traveler
    Paul Robeson
    Eva Purple Ball
    Black Sea Man
    Lemon Boy

I just realized all my tomatoes have sort of people-y sounding names.

I'm starting from seed & most of them are popping up this week. I'm trying for the first time to cram six plants into my teeny garden - repurposing a former flower garden, and putting a cherry in a big container. I've got:

    Italian Heirloom
    Silvery Fir Leaf
    Siberian
    Dr. Wyche's Yellow
    Mexico Midget
Nebraska Wedding (I'm starting this one for my sister as a bridal shower gift! And hoping I'll get two good seedlings so I can have one too. Her shower is Memorial weekend, so perfect timing for her to get it in the ground.)

These are all new to me, I've only been tomato gardening for a few years & I get so excited about trying new varieties that so far I've never repeated a variety!

I truly wish I had 5 times the amount of garden space available to grow all I want....but alas I dont so I grow a few new varieties each season.
So this season I am going to grow about 2-6 each of the following :
    San Marzano 6
    Principe Borghese 2
    Black Cherry 3
    Clementine 3
    Mystery Red Grape 3
    Cherokee Purple 3?
    Aunt Ruby's German Green 2?
    Earl of Edgecomb 2
    Fireball 3
    Olena Ukrainian 3

Oh, this is a great excuse to actually look at what I sowed this year... here's my list:

    Riesentraube
    Brandywine pink
    Tigerella
    Earl's Faux
    Red Ponderosa
    Ceylon

    Stupice
    Sugar Lump
    Polar Baby

    Florida Basket
    Red Currant
    Green Zebra
    Costoluto Genovese
    Sweet Pea Currant
    Yellow pear
    Banana Legs
    First Prize

I tried to get some that would come in early, and some that would come in late, as last year, they all kinda came at the same time and it was tomato overload (though I did learn to can! just ate some too! tasted just like summer!).

I'm actually only going to be able to plant about 30 plants this year, though I've got containers ready for the little dwarfs... if they all come in, I'll be giving plenty away to friends as I double up on sowing all of them.

    Good luck everyone!

Okay, here's my list. It's pretty aggressive for someone who usually only has 10 plants each year, but my list just kept growing with each post I'd read, and well, you know how it is! And besides, I have 5 kids who eat tomatoes like candy. But the biggest reason I have for growing so many is that I now live on 40 acres and plan to do some much needed canning. :) So without further ado (and in no particular order):

    Kellogg's Breakfast
    Roma
    Brandywine (Sudduth Strain)
    Marianna's Peace
    Neve's Azorean Red
    Aunt Ruby's German Green
    Black Krim
    Aunt Gertie's Gold
    Aker's West Virginia
    Pantano Romanesco
    Anna Russian
    Mortgage Lifter
    Kiev
    Opalka
    Kosovo
    Better Bush
    Better Boy
    Park's Season Starter
    Park's Whopper
    Principe Borghese
    Livingston's Oxheart
    Livingston's Magnus

All purchased in 1.8 pint containers or smaller, at least 6 inches tall from various local commercial sources. Plan on making a web-log of the growing season, photos and methods. Will post that link asap. Follwing list is in order of purchase/transplant.

    Beefmaster

    2008 list includes:

    Cherokee Purple
    Purple Calabash
    Stupice
    Costoluto Genovese
    Box Car Willie
    Coustralee
    Reisentraube
    Fourth of July
    Momotaro
    Early Cherry
    Chocolate Cherry
    Mortgage Lifter
    Giant Beefsteak
    Mule Team
    Brandywine OTV
    Marion

Nearly an even split between returning favorites, new varieties (for me), and previous years' efforts that I thought deserved a second (or third) chance.

There are a few I just have a blindspot for and keep growing (more accurately, trying to grow)...Coustralee fits this category as it is one of the more downright attractive tomato plants I have ever grown...production for me has been below average, but I just can't help myself.

This is my first time to try heirlooms. Only second year to try a garden. Last year had horrible results with plants bought and seeds started. Hungry raccoons! Hopefully will be better this year. All heirlooms are being started by seed.

    Amana Orange (90 days)
    Pineapple (85 days)
    Pink Accordion (80 days)
    Great White (85 days)
    Italian tree (85 days)
    Black Krim (75 days)
    Cream Sausage (73 days)
    Tobolsk (86 days)

    Hybrid plants
    Celebrity (1 plant)
    Yellow pear (1 plant)

some other plants are from seeds in a rainbow assortment that the package got thrown away. It will be a big supprise! If anyone has tried these and had results let me know!

As this is my first post, let me introduce myself. My name is Steve and I'm a tomatoholic. Or at least I thought I was until I saw this thread. ;)

My roundup of seed started tomatoes this year:

    Roma (10)
    Principe Borghese (6)
    Sungold (2)
    Stupice (4)
    Brandywine Red (2)
    Cherokee Purple (2)
    Abraham Lincoln (2)

Same as last year but I added one new variety. I'm heavy on the hybrids, but I have good luck with them and we like them, so that's how it is:

    Early Girl
Early Challenge (Probably won't grow this again--using up the seed) (Early Girl is higher yielding, bigger, nicer tomatoes for me) (I'll probably replace with a full-size yellow next year)
    Celebrity
    Ildi
    Large Red Cherry
    Roma
    Plum Dandy
    Park's Whopper
    Beefy Boy
    Brandywine
    Delicious
Jet Star (new for me, but Grandma grew this for years)

  • foose4string

Early Girl- These things produce like crazy! Not too bad tasting for an early...sure beats the supermarket.

Brandyboy- still my all around favorite. These plants are about as hearty as they come. Some fruits prone to catfacing, but certainly no more than the typical beefsteak. These boys put out some fruit!

Brandywine Sudduth's- First time last year. More vigor and better production than the standard Brandywine. I'm a fan!

Cherokee Purple- good taste, good production, I can think of several others I like better. But, I can make room for this one. ;)

Rutgers- an ol' faithful, probably my least favorite of the group

Jet Star- Very nice tomato. Productive, pleasant taste, not strong tasting, but still very good. Nice variation from the stronger tasting beefsteaks.

Kelloggs Breakfast- Big orange tomatoes. Good slicer. Low production. Good taste. Prone to rot.

Mortgage Lifter- Last year was not as good as years past, but I still love this size and taste of it. Now THIS is a beefsteak!

Big Beef- Good production and vigor. Nice, round, uniformly sized, fairly large size, decent taste.

Red October- A first this year. Had this pack for a couple years now, thought I'd finally give it a go.

I got started a little late, but all the seedlings have finally come up.

San Marzano- Was a great producer last year, I'm going to try drying them this year.

Striped Roman- Pretty and tasty. Was super easy to deseed, too.

Eva's Purple Ball- All around lovely and a good producer even in the heat.

Reif Red Heart- I love hearts!

Gran Assaso- I'm pretty sure I just misspelled that, but it's a great pear.

Cherokee Chocolate- I enjoyed Cherokee Purple so much I thought I'd try this one

Juane Flamme- New this year, so I don't know what it'll be like yet.

Garden Peach- Novelty, think I'll make tomato jam this year.

My list has change a little from when I made a "2008 dream list" but I think these are quite adequate. Some on this list were suggested by Darrel which is a good reason I like ordering from him because I'll tell him a variety I want to try and he'll say "I know one that's even better than that" so this way I get to experience some of the best tomatoes from an expert.

The only tomato missing from my list this year that I really wanted on there is Dr. Lyle but it will be on next years list for sure.

I had an incident and had to replace almost all of my seedlings, but I have:
    Red Brandywine
    Yellow Pear
    Celebrity
    Costoluto Genovese
    Golden Rave
    Supersweet 100

The supersweet 100 is the lone tomato survivor of the original seedlings that I planted. It's been uprooted by the dog and force fed "blue stuff" by the BF and is still going strong. I'm worried that it's going to start hogging the remote next. :)

I am growing: Suddith Brandywine Red, Caspian Pink, Cherokee Purple, Prudens Purple, Tennessee Britches (new this year to me), Aunt Gerties Gold (new to me this year), and Black Cherry. I'm trying Stupice for an early tomato, but I haven't been pleased with it before.

But, why not try and try again. I'm giving it "best soil" this year. If it doesn't work this year, I'll toss the seeds.

My seedlings are about the best I've ever had. I put mirrors behind and before the seedlings, so they got more light than usual. I think that is helping. 5 pairs of leaves and only 6" high. I've been subjecting them to an hour of an oscilating fan most days. The stems seem thicker.

  • sunsi

I like the mirror and fan idea, yardman thanks for sharing that. :)

Also, like you I wanted a good early tomato and thought Stupice would be a good choice but Darrel who I ordered my plants from said he had an even better one than that just wish I could remember if it was Kimberly or Galina, lol

  • doof

I just started a second batch of seeds, just in case I have any disasters like last year that leave spots open.

    Kellog's Breakfast
    Neve's Azorean Red
    Riesentraube
    Pruden's Purple
    Cherokee Green
    Pale Perfect Purple
    Sprite
    Black Cherry.

All but Black Cherry are first-timers. I basically took most of the extra seed packets in a drawer that I never got around to opening. Some of these seeds (the Pruden's and the PPP) are kind of old.

They are meant to supplement (should the need arise) the mature plants I planted in the ground March 3:

    Brandywine Sudduth
    Galina's
    Gardener's Delight
    Brown Berry
    Black Pineapple
    Sungold
    Snow White
    Druzba
    Indian Stripe
    Burgundy Traveler (a favorite)
    Paul Robeson
    Crimson Cushion

In previous years I have coddled my tomato babies and used different contraptions to protect them from inclement weather. I usually have great success. This year, I can barely spare 5min away from my baby girl to sneak into the garden to see how the maters are doing. They aren't doing so great. So, from my original list, I have had to do a few replacements with whatever I could find from the "big box" stores or local plant sales.

1.Great White (need a beefsteak) UPDATE - DEAD
2.Purple Calabash (hoping for taste since I liked purple prince) UPDATE - 1 barely alive (Jbox)
3.Green Sausage (novelty) UPDATE - DEAD
4.Purple Prince (LOVE the taste) UPDATE - DEAD
5.Polish Linguisa (need a paste!) UPDATE - Pretty sure it will be dead when I get home today.
6.Black Cherry (hoping for taste and early) UPDATE - Really DEAD
7.Sungold (last year sucked, give it another chance) UPDATE - One of 4 tomatoes I had in 2 J-Boxes(Josho) that is alive
8.Stupice (early) UPDATE - Not sure actually. Suckers are forming where the original branches were sunburned and windwracked (Jbox)
9.SilveryFirTree (for the foliage) UPDATE - I give it 45% survival chance at this stage
10.Oxheart (need a regular red!) UPDATE - ALIVE! One of 4 in jbox.
    Managed to find
    - Red Zebra
    - Amish Paste
    Box Stores
    - Lemon Boy
    - Sweet Million
Will probably get something like beefsteak etc. .Will cross my fingers and pray the rest survives!

Here's what's in the ground (*means I started these from seed):

    One each of these:
    June Pink*
    Great White*
    Big Zebra*
    Red Oxheart
    Black from Tula
    PL Kellogg's Brkfst (KBX)
    Neves Azorean Red
    Early Girl
    Cherokee Green
    Black Cherry
    Galina
    Dr. Caroline Pink
Sweet Thing Grape (maybe - the label was crossed out and written on and we couldn't read what was written)

    2 - Yellow Oxhearts*
    4 - Golden Jubilee
4 - Mortgage Lifter (generic... sigh... my Estler's seeds didn't sprout)
I also lost all my Ultimate Giant and Red Oxheart seedlings to Dampening Off, but I still have several seeds saved back, so I will try again next year now that I know what I did wrong (thanks, Darrel!), but at least I did find one Red Oxheart plant at a greenhouse.

I love going through everyone's lists and see which names keep popping up... I already have some more varieties I want to try next year! :^)

Ok, so after my wilty leafed, dead seedling fiasco LOL...here is what made it into the garden from the seedlings that survived ( and I am very happy with getting them hardened off and in the ground even if it is fewer than I would have liked....I consider this a great learning year).

    Started from seed at home:

San Marzano 1 out of 6

Cherokee Purple 4 instead of the expected 3

Aunt Ruby's German Green 2 out of the expected 2 and possibly a third..it is still small so I held back on it

Olena Ukrainian 2 out of the 3

Campari F2?- 3 : Was sent the seeds(thank you Rocklandguy) and planted them late by the WS/SS method at the end of April. I had doubts, but they are now looking like they will be big enough in a week or 3 to go into the garden, better late than never ...Wooohooo :)

    From the store:

    Mr Stripey- 1
    Better Boy- 6
    Golden Girl- 3

    Sun Sugar- 1
    Sweet 100's- 2

I love seeing what everyone is growing!! I can't wait to see some more pictures too :)

Planted out May 17th; all doing well here in NE Colorado:

    Bonnie Best
    *Boxcar Willie
    Chico
    Costoluto Genovese
    Marglobe
    Mortgage Lifter
    Nicholson's Yellow Cherry
    *Romeo
    *Rose de Berne
    Sprite
    *Yellow Stuffer

    FAILED:
Giant Oxheart (but the Romeo takes its place!)

This is our first year EVER to grow all tomatoes from seed; some were "wintersown" thanks to Trudi D's group; and others sown "under the lights". All were first transplanted before April 15th and were consequently exposed to the elements with only burlap sheeting for cover during our early spring snow, hail & wind. NP, of some 12 dozen or more seeds sown, I have sold or given away more than half... **Anyone need starters?** They travel well... :)

    Brandywine

    Brandywine Pink

    Giant Belgium

    Porterhouse

    Giant Delicious

    Box Car Willie

    Red Rose

    Cherokee Purple

    Brandy Boy

    Orange Wellington

    Kellogg's Breakfast

    Sun Gold (cherry tomatoes)

    Black Cherry (cherry tomatoes)

Can't wait to see the results in the garden, sometimes sowing seeds indoors and growing seedlings can be challenging, but also very rewarding!

A vantage thread... Interesting how some old popular ones are still around this season after SEVEN (7) years. They must have have passed the test of time and the test of TASTES. .

But , as it is always the case the gardeners get a lot of enthusiasm about planning and planting BUT don't like to come back and evaluate how their choices did in the real garden and real life.
