Coral Honeysuckle would look lovely on your trellis. Very tropical looking. My favorites include:
Angle Trumpet
Elephant Ears (for part shade)
Bananna
Lantana
Bamboo (any kind)

Maxcat, I also live in S.C. and am just getting into tropical gardening. I have an alocacia (hope I spelled that right) that is fantastic looking.

One plant suggestion for you....any of the ornamental sweet potota cultivars work very well as ground covers. There are black/ dark purple leaf forms ("Blackie", "Ace of Spades"; lime/ chartreuse green; green & white variegated ("Split Milk"), green, white & lavender ("Tricolor"); and a bronzy color ("Sweet Caroline Bronze").

They cover a lot of ground in one growing season, & can be easily propagated from the tubers or from stem cuttings.

another very tropical looking plant that would thrive in your araa is the Rice paper plant, tetrapanex, and a great small bamboo " sasa palmata, and clereodendron trichotoma,, which grows into a small tree even here in CT
