Great! What variety are you growing? I guess we definitely got our necessary chill hours in this year.

Harry

Hi Harry,

It's Dorsett Golden. I have learned that it's crucial when you pick it, so the fruit doesn't get mushy.

Congrats Boson! Do you have pics?

Boson,

Do you do anything different with your apples - strip the leaves at a certain time, etc? I have an order coming from bay laurel nursery of a 4 in 1 grafted apple, peach & plum and am trying to get as much info about growing them as possible. They were kind of expensive so I am prepared to baby them to the extreme. My tropicals are pretty carefree but I have a feeling I have to give these trees some extra attention. I really can't find any info on the web specific to growing apples and such in zone 10.

I strip my leaves off mid December. Mine have started to develop spurs but most things are still dormant around here, but I am z9a. I lean to the persuasion that apples are not as particular to chill hours but length of dormancy. Thus, by stripping the leaves in Dec most will fruit even in z10. I have Dorsett Golden and Anna, have had difficulty finding Tropic Sweet locally.

I grow mine more like a peach, with an open center, due to the high humidity and pest probs.

Here are a few pictures of one of my Dorsett Golden trees that I took today. I know that I am probably overly excited about this. I haven't done anything really with the trees. They had a bout of anthracnose about 2 months ago and lost almost all leaves.

I the background you can see my passion flower vein taking over the fence.
