Ladybugs suck.

I have been releasing ladybugs (purchased at OSH), a little at a time, each evening just before dark, until they were all gone, to get rid of red aphids on my tomatoes.

Color me unimpressed! I am still out there, everyday, picking them off the undersides of leaves and off the growing tips of my tomatoes. And today I found they had spread to my younger tomatoes in 32 oz cups that I was about to ship to my brother. (That will have to be his problem).

I know that soap works, and I have used it before with the larger black aphids that like to congregate on the vines, rather than growing tips. I'm a little reluctant to do that this time, though, because these are so well infiltrated into what I have allowed to become a rather thick, impenetrable tomato jungle that I don't know if I would be able to wash off the soap again very effectively. And I thought, at least from my experience, that although older leaves and vines can handle soap, growing tips were more vulnerable to it.

Reading on the web, garlic spray sounds like it might be worth a try. I'd like to give that a shot.

BUT...

What about all my ladybugs?? I have spent the past week setting them out. Most of them seem to have departed already for better parts, but there are still many on my plants, and I went to such trouble (and $7 expense) that I would hate to kill them with either soap or garlic or any other spray.

Is there any other spray that will control aphids I can try that won't decimate the ladybugs?
