overwintered sungold

I have a sungold tomato that survived the winter outdoors and is starting to grow again. its a pretty scrawny plant because we transplanted it last june when we moved, but it does have some new growth on it and even ripened a tomato in february.

i left it in the ground when i planted my new plants with the hope that it might get a jumpstart and ripen fruit early, on the other hand i have heard that overwintered plants are prone to disease.

has anyone ever overwintered tomatoes outdoors? is there any advantage/disadvantage? should i cut it back? all the way down? half way down?

any info would be appreciated.
