Hi Laurie, if you are refering to this kind of Ficus trees (see link) I dont think they are a good choice.

I hate those trees (they look fine, though) because they have destroyed all my sidewalks house and are a very succesful reservoir of termites, and I never can get rid of termites in these kind of trees.

Would have to agree with Patusho, In warm climates these trees turn into monsters. They take an enormous amount of space and it is almost impossible to grow anything underneath them.
There are about 700 species in this genus so lots of variation. Unless you have a lot of room I'd suggest something else. DONOT plant one anywhere near a sewer or water pipe and allow for the constant drop of staining figs.
They do make wonderful Bonsat subjects and can be pruned into any shape.
In Hawaii there would be soooo many other choices of what to grow I wouldn't even consider them as a yard tree.

Wow, thanks for the tip re. termites! We have to be very careful not to create habitat for them here. Guess I will just keep my ficus in a pot.
