handling peppers

Okay, I know if I handle jalapenos or other hot peppers to be careful to wash my hands thoroughly and all that.

But this morning I bought several extra poblanos since they were on sale. I washed, stemmed and removed the seeds and membranes and cut them into strips and put them in freezer bags to store in the freezer.

Afterwards I cleaned up thoroughly. Then I had some cheese and crackers for lunch. Within a couple of minutes I realized that I underestimated the poblanos. I consider them mild peppers. My skin did not. My lips starting stinging and felt a little bit swollen. I had a couple of red spots on my face that was also stinging.

I washed my hands again and again and I've tried everything on them. My face no longer stings, but my hands, while they look normal -- no redness, no blotching or rash or anything like that -- still sting. And it is now almost 12 hours since I touched the poblanos.

I've never had this reaction before. Not even after handling jalapenos or serranos.

I thought about taking some benadryl, but there's no rash. No outward sign of anything wrong. Just a medium stinging in several spots on my hands. Most notably near the thumbs and forefingers.

Any ideas?
