Aralia root rot

My beautiful Aralia just started to droop. IÂm sure it is due to overwatering. I have it in a double pot and always watered from the bottom, my husband decided I wasnÂt watering it and started watering from the top. Can you suggest anything that I can do to save it. IÂm trying to dry it out but it looks worse each day.
