Has anyone attempted removing/roasting raw cashews to get them out of the shell?

I've read one article that said roasting is no longer the first option, that you bury the cashew in some kind of wet mixture(like sand and water) and the moisture will pop open the shells? What happens to the acid though, wouldn't it be in the sand when you un-bury the nuts?

All I know is I have a bumper crop of cashews this year and think it'd be kinda neat if I could eat them without 3rd degree burns!
