Jackfruit question

Is there any way to keep a jackfruit tree under 14' and still have it flower? I know they get huge in tropical climates. Are seed grown jackfruit even worth keeping or is this a tree that should be grafted? I have a bad habit of planting pits/seeds from tropical fruit and now have 2 small jackfruit trees that I started last year. My GH is only 15' high so I can't keep anything that can't be kept fairly small and am limited for space so don't want to waste it on a lost cause.

Since they flower off big branches and the main trunk, should not be a problem, although trimming might be a negative factor on flowering since it spurs vegetative growth.

Can definitely be done. Fairchild Gardens has had a whole breeding program which entails crosses that can all be managed within the size limits you mention. Some of my seedling crosses are from this program.

You can definitely keep jakfruit way smaller than 14 ft. I have read about 8' for many varieties. Just have to be aggressive on the pruning.

Harry, My bangkok lemon is grafted pretty high. Probably about 2 ft up. After seeing your trees flowering from so low I am wondering if having it grafted so high might limit my fruit production. What do you think?

did you get it from excalibur?
i think mine was and its a seedling, got it from the rare fruit council sale.
    post pictures of the graft.

    John:

It might still bloom from the rootstock....but that is not necessarily a bad thing. You might get a new surprise cultivar to name. I don't have any actual experience with high grafts to say for certain. However, once the tree is ready to bear fruit, it should fruit from most of the lower limbs and the entire trunk...so you should be OK.

Karyn...I have a gold nugget jak growing in my greenhouse. 3 yrs old and has been pruned harshly many times...for shaping as well as height. It's very full and currently up against the glass up top...13'+.

Still waiting for the first blooms. Erik at PIN, tells me that this variety will not usually bloom until about 4 yrs old or when the trunk gets around 4" diameter. Getting close. Sure wish this pig would pop a bloom though.

    Mango kush,
The graft on mine is a wedge graft. There is not much left to take a pic of though. It's a decent sized tree and the graft is very well healed at this point.

most varieties of jackfruit will probably flower and may fruit well before 14 foot tall. some varieties are more vigorous and others make very nice small pruned trees

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll keep them and see what happens. These are from seeds I got from a slice of fruit I bought at the Korean market. I have no idea what the variety is.

Was the fruit good? They are supposed to be pretty much true from seed.

It had a nice taste. It wasn't as good as fruit I've had fresh from the tree in the tropics but not bad.

karyn1: your query is exactly what was on my mind. I have 2 dozen seedlings - grown from seed - from Sierra Leone and am looking to keep them small. One of my associates tells me jackfruit are one of the few fruit trees that are just as fast from seed as they are from a graft, if not faster.
