Get as much of the root as possible, plant it the same depth that you found it growing in and keep moist and shaded. It may go into shock but usually will return the next year or even later in the season.Good luck. Kareen

Not to take the fun out of your gardening ,but!If these transplants are from elsewhere on your own property your fine.If they are from state forest you my be braking the law.If your in NY you are.Check with your state wildlife office.Also keep in mind that transplanting from other locations may bring bugs or disease you don't want.

Have to agree with Craig76 - stealing plants from their native habitat is generally a bad thing. The only time I can think that would be OK is in a "rescue" type of situation, where the land and plants will be torn up for development - and then only with the permission of the owners. If the plants were on state-owned ground, you are definitely on the wrong side of the law.
