dragon fruit trellis plan T

well with plan A-S used up I guess I'm onto Plan T. This is my new, new, new design for my dragon fruit. The idea is to mimic how people are growing them in ground. Up a central shaft with an umbrella-like canopy at the top. I reused redwood from the previous design and have the verticle piece suspended above the potted cacti to avoid water rot. We shall see.

first pic is the last design,

Pretty neat and well thought out...for plan T!!!! Kidding. Seriously, it looks good. Please understand that I have NO criticism here and only praise...but I do have a few suggestions.

I would possibly lengthen the pieces some at the top to give the branches more area to drape over once they begin to branch out more. The last would be to put in some diagonal bracing at the bottom for your center post...all four sides. It would really suck to start getting top heavy and rip it out of those two boards.

thanks Gary and J for your kind comments.

Hey J, suggestions are always welcome. I have the center post resting on a horizontal (post hovers over pot) and additional cross bars are attached to it and screwed into the base. I also have cables and eyelets on the diagonals of all four cornesrs (for support) they are hard to see in the picture though. My idea for the top support at first was to have it larger or equal sized to my base. In the end I went slightly smaller (12" compared to 18.5"). The thinking was it would help center the mass more, ideally making it less top heavy. I also cram these into my GH over winter. I have delusions about the umbrella canopy of plant taking up equal space to the base of the stand, allowing me to place them even closer. The base is designed so eventually (Plan U, long time away) I can unscrew the side of the base for repotting. At that point I'll probably remove the tera cotta pot and line the base with pond liner for more root room.

Through trading and purchase, I'll probably end up with about 10 dragon fruit varieties. I might have to start putting 2 to a pot?

    thanks again guys,

Ethan...yer right! I did miss those cables completely! I look back at the picture and they now stand out like a sore thumb. Nice.

I made my top support rather large and the plants still extend waaaay outside of it. They are taking up much more room than I ever dreamed they would take. Probably time for a big pruning.

Ten varieties is a lot! I do like the idea of one variety to a pot though...if you have enough room to store them all. Good job and keep us updated on the progress.

....And post that Pachypodium on the C&S forum. It's gotten huge over the last two years.
