Is it just me or does Arbuznyi look very similar to indian stripe? Is Arbuznyi another name for indian stripe?

All I know is the description I got from the seed supplier :

This variety was first listed in the SSE YEarbook in 2007 by Andrey from Belarus, whom I know well.

THe above description is a bit over the top compared to those who list it in the 08 Yearbook.

Have you grown Indian Stripe? I ask b'c the stripes are faint indeed and are the same as one sees with Cherokee Purple, of which Indian Stripe is a version of, if you will.

Arbuznyi is from the former USSR and Indian Stripe is from Arkansas; they are two different varieties.

DTM ranges from 75 to 85 days, not so early, and colors range from a deep raspberry, to black and green to reddish brown as described by different listers of this variety.

Andrey says 150=200 gram fruits, which is about 5-7 oz, another person got 4 oz fruits, two say flattened fruits and one says round fruits.

All got their seeds from Andrey last year and Andrey and one other say "good" taste and the 3rd person makes no taste comment.

It seems to me that the description given by the seed supplier is quite over the top, as I said above, compared to those who have grown it and reported back in their SSE listings. But then many folks selling seeds usually do write glowing descriptions.

BTW, Andrey says that the Watermelon translation of the name refers to the shape of the leaves. And 2/3 do mention stripes.

Andrey says RL, but leaves shaped like watermelon leaves so to me that means the leaves have several lobes as do watermelon leaves.

And yes, I know Solana seeds. Not anyone there, but their business.

The ones in (Habman's) photo's of the variety,look quite a bit bigger than the stipulated 4 to 6 ozs to me, more like 8 to 16 ounces, especially the big green one, perhaps he was very lucky and got a good strain of it, either that or he has been feeding them very well :)

Yeah, we touched on the similarity in looks between Indian Stripe fruit and Arbuznyi fruit earlier this year in a thread at this forum.
The same pictures of Arbuznyi from Solana's catalog site were posted in comparison to these photos of Indian Stripe fruit ...

Yes, the Indian Stripe tomatoes in the three photos above look similar to the Arbuznyi tomatoes in the Solana photos posted by Habman,
but they certainly aren't the same variety.

Andrey (the Belarussian fellow who introduced Arbuznyi to the West) told me that Arbuznyi translates as "watermelon-like"
and refers to the leaf shapes as Carolyn said already. It is interesting that the stripes shown on the green Arbuznyi fruit
in the Solana catalog look similar to a watermelon rind too.

It would be delightful if Arbuznyi from Solana seed I started this year is as early, productive and delicious as Indian Stripe ... a hard tomato to top IMO.

My first Arbuznyi WOOHOO!

Where do I start?
Plant is robust tall and somewhat large.
Productivity is very good compared to Cherokee chocolate.
I had a few toms with BER (weather is just terrible this year...rain rain rain ... )
I was expecting a deep red and green color but what I got is again similar to Cherokee chocolate.
The taste is surprisingly excellent I wish I could describe it in words all I can say is again it s very similar to Cherokee Chocolate.
The texture is excellent juicy and melts in your mouth.
My first Arbuznyi weight in at 400g (14oz).

I m rating it a 9.5 out of 10!!!!

This tom is most definitely going to be back in my garden next year.

My experience with Arbuznyi was not the same as the grower above.

The vine remained healthy and very productive until it began ripening small to medium sized fruit initially very similar to Indian Stripe except more finicky to start, markedly smaller in fruit size, and definitely far more disease prone.

When fully ripe, the difference in color was more marked in that Arbuznyi ended up similar to the description givin in the original post of this thread ... dark red-brownish fruits with mahogony shoulders. Arbuznyi has a yellow epidermis while Indian Stripe has clear epidermis.

As to the interior, it is very curious because the walls have the typical "brick red" hue of other "black" or "purple" tomatoes, but the gel in the seed locules remains heavily stained with chlorophyll. In other words, when you squeeze out the seeds, you get tons of seeds in a dark green liquid. And because the seed cells are so many and so large, when you skin the tomato after poaching it in simmering water, the dark green longitudinal "windows" between the brick red locule walls clearly show why the exterior looks so striped when the skin was encasing the whole deal.

Sliced into a lateral cross section the interior reveals more seed and gel than meat ... a characteristic I find repulsive in a tomato other than a cherry. If you like seeds and gel, Arbuznyi is the tomato for you! Oh, and it's rather bland.

Saving grace? Well, if you're a seed vendor and have a customer base willing to pay 4.95 for 15 seeds in response to hyperbole ... Arbuznyi is a gold mine.

ARBUZNYI ( watermelon like ?). I have seem some green stage patterns that resembles watermelon rind. Its leaves also have similarity to watermelon leave. So this make ARBUZNYI an interesting tomato.

Now that ARBUZNYI is on my 2015 grow list , I like to get more opinions on it.
I like its color, both when green and ripe. I see some resemblance to Ananas Noire as shown in the last picture posted by habman

I also like its mean DTM (75 ?). That is early to mid season .

Lets see if anybody else has grown it since 2009 . (9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 ). It has been a long time.

My ABRUZNYI is just germinating.
When I ordered the seeds (from SSS), I had no idea that it is a black/brown/purple tomato.
Now this year I will have a collection:

Arbuznyi
Cherokee Purple
Black from Tula
Japanese Black Trifele
Black Cherry.

I have grown CP and JBT before. They are not work horses but their fruits were outstanding. Now remains to be seen how Arbuznyi and BFT will do in my cool PNW garden.
