Could you provide us with the specific genus and species? There's the heath family, Ericaceae, that includes rhodies, azaleas, arbutus etc but there's is also common heather, Calluna vulgaris...is this what you're asking about?

Erica x darleyensis hybrids are believed to be quite tolerant of the hot summers of the Southeast. The 'Mediterranean Pink/White' varieties can often be found even in the big box stores and they do well for us in NC.

I had the Erica x darleyensis hybrids growing for years in the same area as some blue star juniper but last winter finally did them in. There would be occasional damage from ice storms but not fatal.

I am late getting back to this. We've had mixed results with this. We purchased the following. The fuzzy type didn't do very well. We are still waiting to get through our first hot Virginia summer. Will update this post in September.
