puglvr did hers around late march. She cut it down to about 2-3 ft. Within 4-5 weeks (if i recall correctly) it branched and developed new leaves.

I'm planning on doing the same with my potted Carrie. I bought it back in July and grew a few inches vertically and developed 6 horizontal branches. It looks like its starting to grow some new leaves or blooms. A little early to tell.

Do you know if we need to leave at least one branch when pugging? I also have a Pickering that I bought 6 months ago. It has grown alot but the branches are quite high up.I havent seen any flowers but too afraid to pug it as I am expecting it to flower at any time. Should I go ahead and do it? and where do the flower starts..from the tip?

I believe the photos I came across reading here, they made the cut about 2.5 to 3 feet from the soil (meaning anything above that, including the branches, gone!)

There shouldn't be anything wrong with tip pruning (roughly every 16-20" per branch growth, or pruning just above the second set of "pedal looking" leaves growth) on the first 2-3 years on a tree.

This is so you get it on its 'pruning program' at a young and early age instead of waiting for mature harden growth.

I know its a lot of info but keep re watching (yes, repeatedly) those videos. As you get to know the behavior and stages of these trees, it will begin to make more and more sense.. I literally watched fairchild gardens videos on pruning and mangos and learned the terms he uses, why he does it and when he does it.

Again I would wait for March to pug and prune. I just pruned my 1.5 yr old Carrie tries in Oct.

Just keep them protected from extreme colds *usually anything 40 and below*

Seagel is giving you great advice, Eden. I've followed the adventures of puglvr ( the lady who did chop down to 2-3 feet one of her mango trees years ago...and for which the word "pug" was coined!). She's done it on some other mangoes too, and her trees tend to be very bushy - shorter and thick with branches....and she's also, I think, a central Florida resident....

Congrats on a nice healthy looking Maha Chanok. I'm going to "pug" mine around 3-4' when I get another mango tree. I've been looking for a Maha and no one besides PG will ship them to Californiaâ¦

This was taken before I planted it in the ground ( June 2014)...Had 5 mangoes 4 made it to maturity...I planted it inground 2 months later. Hoping to get some again next summer :o)
