Welcome to Texas, the land of almost year-round gardening! If you plan to start your own tomato and pepper plants, do so now. Otherwise, there will be transplants available at nurseries and feed stores when it's time for them to go in the ground.
If you click on http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/plantanswers/earthkind/ekgarden14.html you will find a spring planting guide for vegetable crops. I believe you are in region III. There is also a fall guide available.
Your county agricultural extension agent will have a list of varieties adapted to your area. He/she can be found in the phone book under Agrilife or Agricultural Extension, or by calling the court house where someone will be able to connect you to the ag. agent.
A lot of folks had problems with peppers last year. It was the hot dry summer that did them in, I think. Ours just sat there until the cooler weather and rains of fall arrived, and we finally got some peppers.

i plan to continue with planting my winter crops, don't
plan to start any summer stuff for awhile, but i do plan to
start some perennials, i've got yellow bells, and texas star hibiscus, i know its early, but i'm prepared to baby them till march, i'm hoping to use the tx. star as a "hedge" type planting to hide the bare field nextdoor

we're expecting a light freeze this weekend, so on monday
or so, i plan to put in another row of carrots, and maby onions, but i didn't have so much luck with them so far

Put your tomato transplants in my 3 week of Feb till end of March. Protect if it gets near 40. I think it is too late for seeds. I started my seeds ( tomato) beg of January.
I have a rule I go by...weird...I am not a fan of the Hybrids my local feed store puts out. But I am a fan of their timing. So I try to see what they put out then I go buy at my fav stores the varieties I like. Cukes grow great too but wait till it is warmer.

I googled "planting schedule, Travis county" and got the PDF below. Try that with your county name if you are not in Travis. I have found this schedule great. I have three laminated copies floating around.
