I've never run a stacking system but I've heard a lot of sources saying that leachate equals too much wetness. My totes used to be overly swampy without leachate. I put the bottom holes 1/2" from the bottom so I didn't need a catch. I suppose you need bottom holes for a stacking system though?

I'm sorry I wasn't very clear. Yes, the bottom of the bin where the worms are (lets call it the processing bin) will have holes. With the OSCRjr for example. the processing bin is put into another bin which has holes on the side for ventilation but no holes at the bottom.

The other kind does not have this outer bin. The processing bin is put onto one of the lids which serves as a leachate tray.

I would think it is a personal choice. A tote/the lid would both equally well for catching any leachate. As Eric mentioned, having leachate at all, is a sign of too much liquid in the bin.

Excess liquid is easily managed sucking it out with a turkey baster, or adding dry shredded paper.
I have 4 bins, and none have holes for drainage.

You could add holes along the perimeter a couple inches from the bottom for extra aeration though.

If you haven't started your new bin yet, check out the thread 'my flow through bin.' Since I'm single, I set up the bin in a standard tall kitchen waste pail. There's much more oxygen flowing through with this system and my product has improved greatly in quality and quantity (and number of new worms breeding.) It's a little harder to set up to begin with, but easier to maintain.
