you're not the first person to describe this kind of symptom this year

it sounds like bacterial canker, which is pretty serious stuff. If you thought late blight was bad wait till you see what this does - long term to a garden and to seed saving.

Good thing is bacterial canker usually doesnt start till it gets warmer out.

Hopefully it isnt that.

Edges of leaves have holes on them and fungus/bacteria start in them and produce the kind of symptoms you describe. So it could be other things beside bacterial canker.

I don't see "soot" that you refer to. Seems to me more like off-color leaves.

What's the prevailing temps been? Also, have you fertilized? If so, with what & when and at what strength?

Color me crazy, but I don't see anything wrong with these plants. As mentioned above there might be some purple coloration to some of the leaves but otherwise they look healthy.

Might try a foliar spray of dilute micronutrients if deficiency is the cause.
