lychee update

Lychee update

Well my lychee trees are looking promising for 2009 with most showing good signs of panicle growth. Left to be seen in the next few weeks the length and quality of the panicles.

This would be the first good crop for me in 4 years because of various storms that have past by Jamaica. So this year I went back on my routine of fertilizing, pruning and girdling and trees seems to have responded well.

Of course after all the weird weather out here maybe all the trees are just ready to put out good crops this year. You never know, all you can do is try to plan your program properly.

I have 27 trees , two really old ones that are over 30 feet tall, 7 at about 15 feet and the rest about 10 feet. Mostly Mauritius and a few Brewsters, I am 2300 feet above sea level.

Great to hear, but you can't post a thread like this without pictures.

Jsvand5 I totally agree, the pictures will be coming a little slower for a while as my camera was stolen a month back. I Will borrow a friends soon and get you guys up to date. sorry.

Here are the pictures I promised. I keep wondering how this post would look to none fruit lovers, nothing but trees with buds and blossoms. Any way everyone here is probably just as hooked. So here goes.

these are pictures of my two 30 ft trees, they have grown together in the middle.

Part of the second one not looking as promising

Brewster in partial flush,,was not girdled this year

Couple of the 15 foot trees.

this 15 footer just showing signs

    Finally 10 ft trees.

Hope all are not bored stiff from looking at blossoms.

Wow, looks like you are in for quite a harvest. I have 4 very small trees and 3 of them look to be starting bloom spikes, but it looks like one branch of one of your trees will beat my crop. Good luck getting a good fruit set. How old are your largest trees?

Thanks, the two oldest are over 30 years old, don't remember the exact age. They have lost at least a 3rd of their branches the last 4 years from hurricane damage.

Great going Ronald. I have a chest freezer and accept shipments, by the way. My sweetheart has bloom spikes starting, its finally big enough to hold a small harvest. I expect to leave only around 4 dozen fruit on it, or something like that, depending on my greed.

How large is your sweetheart dghays? Did you remove previous blooms or did it not set fruit? Mine sweetheart is only about 4 ft tall but has a nice canopy and is sending up bloom spikes. I am not sure I'll be able to make myself thin the crop but it's a good problem to have I guess.

Good luck with your crop Gary. Unfortunately customs probably won't let in my lychees over there, that's my explanation and I am sticking to it.

Thinning fruit is always hard, but usually you are rewarded with bigger fruit to brag about , and if its a small tree then there is less stress on the tree.

We just found a double june plum today, will get a picture and post it.

jsvand5, my SwHt lychee is 6 or 7' tall and did have about an 8' spread, but I cut one large limb which had a narrow crotch, to eliminate a weak point. It has NEVER flowered. This is about its 4th year. I have never withheld fertilizer or watering, so that probably helped inhibit flowering.

Ronald, I'm extremely disciplined about not allowing young trees to fruit. I want fruit in the DOZENS, not one or two in most circumstances. No need involving customs, a cigar boat can drop the shipment off from the intercoastal waterway a mile from my house!

For some reason Gary I think a boat from Jamaica dropping off suspicious packages would lead people to assume some other green matter was inside , not lychees.

Great looking trees you have there. Congrats on the large bloom spikes.

I wonder if mine will flower this year or not. Seem like a good year for you. Congrats!
