It ended up that I had to go to San Diego this past weekend. Since I ordered my worms, which were to be shipped on Monday from the area I called the place and asked if I could save myself the cost of shipping and pick them up. He said yes which I thought was wonderfully nice since it was a Sunday.

Anyway, so I got home Sun evening with 2 lbs of worms. I put them in their new home and within an hour about 20 or so were trying to make their escape. I had read about this being a possibility which was probably made worse by the rain we'd been having, so was prepared with a clip on utility light equipped with a low watt energy efficient bulb that gives off almost no heat.

Now here we are two days later and they seem to be doing well although if I turn the light out within an hour or two there are 20 or so climbing the sides.

Otherwise they have eaten the 1/2 cup of food waste I put in before their arrival so today I added another 1/2 cup to another area of the bin and misted the shredded paper on top as well as the cardboard covering since they seemed a bit dry to me which is probably due mostly to the light and no lid.

Other than peeking in the closet to make sure there are not worms everywhere I have been doing a good job of not messing with them too much. Although once a day, in the evening after supper and homework, my girls and I peek inside the bin to check things out. I do believe I enjoy this as much (possibly more) than they do. I am happy to say the worms have mostly left the bedding they came in and seem to be active in all layers of the bin. I believe this is a good thing.
