NEW: ~~obf~~september swap~~

Sorry for being so late in posting, and photobucket won't let me in to post the logo.
OBF SEPTEMBER DIVIDE and CONQUER SWAP

As summer comes to an end, it's time to divide and conquer the garden beds. The beds get cleaned up or reconfigured; perennials need to be thinned out; and either some bulb lifting (depending on your geographic area) or bulb planting. This is the perfect time to share the fruits of your labor with your fellow OBF gardener.

Send a box of your garden extras to your partner by the 25th of the month. Let's make this box a true garden box, let it contain only plants or bulbs from your garden to your partner's. No food items or tchotchkes (knick knacks) this time around, we can save that for the winter months.

I'll take sign ups until the 10th, and will do my best to post partners not too long after.

Hope you can join.

    Hi all...just checking in...

Melissa, that re-treat sounds so peaceful and relaxing...just what you needed at the time.

Shirley, I will be getting your box ready this weekend and shipping on Monday. Your right fall is just too short...my favorite season. With the leaves changing, apple and pumpkin picking, hayrides, Halloween (my favorite), and all the colors...oranges, browns, yellows, reds... **sigh****probably why I was married in Nov. :0)

    Have a great day everyone!

    Remy
You and your family are 'local celebrities!' Sounds like a lot of fun. I agree with Carol your father is very attractive!!! I would never have guessed his age!

    Vina
you really make me wish for fall! That pre-winter crisp in the air, leaves crackling underfoot.... aaaahhh!
Best run and get back to work!

I may not be able to get your box out by the 25th Dianne, but I'll certainly try. --- I have some things on order and am just waiting for them to arrive.

    Can't wait for Fall!

Just came by to say hello to everyone!
My Master Gardener group had their annual plant sale on Saturday so with that and company here, it was a busy weekend. My husband laughs - I spend several months growing some things for the plant sale, donate my things and go to help with getting it set up, and then shop at it, too! LOL I came home with a cast iron plant, a pregnant onion, and a Plectranthus 'Mona Lavender.' Does anyone grow any of these? I am thinking the pregnant onion and plectranthus will need to come either indoors or into my garage for the winter. I think the cast iron plant can stay outdoors. Sounds like some research is in order before it gets cold.
    Have a good week!

hi everyone...sorry taking so long to post. my computer at home is shot. the one at work doesn't allow you to get onto "forums" and the library, since all the funding is POOF, has the most sporadic hours.

FRANCES....I am so very sorry, but i see you are going to swap with Shirley. Did i not get the list right? i guess i never saw your decision to play.

carol, i will be happy with anything you send, named or not. and yes, unnamed days are just fine with me. my garden has some wonderful flowers from yours throughout these years and i'll be happy to have more.

    vina, i'm working on things.
    dianne, ditto - for august.
life has been outrageous these last months

melissa, glad to see you up and about. what a nice surprize from hubz. continued prayers. i finally got a box to fit all the clothes, now i just have to figure out how to UPS it, i don't think i can USPS it.

on a positive note, i just brought myself a little cottage in the mountains. once life calms down, that's where i will spend most of my "off" time. i need so bad to get out of the environment that i am in - it's unhealthly. enough said!

well, that's about it. time is limited here and i used most of it. i hope everyone is doing well. the weather has been exceptional.

    be well all
    it's almost blanket weather!!!!!!!!!!!11

    Good morning everyone.

Shirley, I have not mailed your box yet. I had a doctor's appt. yesterday that I completely forgot about. By the time I got out of there I had to pick my Taylor up from school. I WILL be packing up today and mailing either this afternoon or tom. (at the latest). I hope you like your surprise!!:0)

Frances, I am right there with ya! LOVE FALL!!

Sue, your box sounds wonderful. Yucca Colorguard...that is going to be lovely!

Jeanne, I am trying to host a plant swap at our County Fair next year. My husband says its so I can get more plants. LOL (But I think he's right) :0)

Maryanne, take your time...I'm not in any rush...it's been a little crazy on this end too.

    Talk to you all soon,
    vina

It's hard to believe how fast this month is flying by!

Thanks for the update on the August swap Maryanne and also Sue for letting me know about September. No hurry.

I am still getting my box together for Treasa so I still have some adding to do before it is complete.

Jeanne, I love going to the Master Gardeners plant sale when they have it here. I am hoping it is coming up soon.

We are having some cooler weather here and more rain in TX. Feels like a cool fall day here today.

Just popping in to say hi.

Sue, glad to hear your box arrived okay.

Carol, I completed my trade with Tergrov and all went well. I'd be happy to welcome her to our group.

Maryanne, congrats on your new pied'tere! Sorry about your computer and the whole limited library time, etc. Hope you'll have one at your new cottage!

DH has made reservations for my birthday to go to Hershey and for me to have a chocolate bean hull massage! I had one about five years ago when we went for our anniversary and it was heaven! Best exfoliator on the planet and such a heavenly scent! As he said, and I SO agree, "we don't need to collect more "stuff", so I thought you would like this!" Hell yeah!

Maryanne, my dh is on a canning rampage, only problem is he wants me to do the canning after 20 jars of applesauce, 30 of spiced pears, 24 of salsa and 30 of stewed tomatoes, carol is tired, now he says he wants 60 jars of whole tomatoes, so I am exausted and your box is gonna be late, sorry hope to dig soon, but I will be late, sorry. big hugs overcooked carol

    Carol
That is a lot of canning! my garden really was a flop this year, other than cukes and peppers, the wet and the bugs and slugs were brutal. My canning jars are full of freshly dried herbs!

    Dottie
Your box should be on its way tomorrow! I hope you will enjoy it!

Greetings to every one, I am off to bed, this house painting is starting to take its toll!

Happy rainy Sunday. When I got back from the spa weekend that DH took me to for my birthday yesterday, I had another great surprise! Frances' box arrived!

Frances, I am so excited about the canna - can't wait to see how it grows. I'm going to plant it in a pot under lights instead of storing the tubers until Spring. The tradescantia pallida is something I've never had, and I'll also pot it up and make it into a hanging basket for the deck. Ditto the purple homestead verbena. I love creeping thyme and can never have enough of it. The euonymous gives me an idea for a place we've had trouble growing things. The sedum with yellow flowers will be lovely in my new "sun bed" also. Oxalis is also a new one to me and I've had fun reading up all about it. Thanks so much also for the daff bulbs, the holiday cactus and one other plant that has gorgeous green leaves on long arching stems. I suspect it is meant to be a houseplant? Somehow I am missing its name. If you recall who he is, I'd love to know. It is an awesome box! Thank you!

    Dottie

    Happy Birthday Dottie!

The unnamed plant is probably an Anthurium, it is a housplant (low light) it has white flowers pretty much all year here. The canna has really pretty flowers, red but very soft, not that bright orange-red and the leaves are just stunning, I grow it more for the folliage(green/burgundyred)than the flower. (if you ever want more let me know! I have a ton!!!) We don't lift them in the winter in this area and they seem to multiply like bunnies while 'dormant' ha ha ha

I really hope you will enjoy them!

    Frances

Oh Wow, Frances! Burgundy foliage! While we were at Hershey yesterday we walked around the gardens. They have loads of canna there with the burgundy foliage, which I just adore. I spent hours looking online to see if I could buy seeds for some, but none of them seem to produce seeds, and tubers are $20 at Karchesky Canna! I am thrilled to have the one you sent! I had gotten seeds from someone in a trade previously for "Intrigue", but out of ten seeds I planted, only one came out with dark foliage. The rest were green. Guess that's what happens with canna offspring. (Jeez, I hope the seeds I've sent in trades grew up to be what I said!)

Also, I forgot to say, thanks for the envelopes of seeds you sent, too. I am a mad seeder and will be planting them in my basement under lights as soon as I bring in the tender plants.

Yeah, I think Carol said it best a while ago. "Now it's official that I'm older than dirt". I did enjoy the visit to Hershey Spa a whole lot, though. I'm willing to log on another year to do that again :) A "chocolate scrub" is to die for, and having a professional facial is a whole new world. In between services you just wander around and eat chocolates and breathe. It's awesome.

Well, enough reminiscing . . . gotta prepare for work tomorrow. Hope everyone had a good weekend.

Maryanne, I sent you an e-mail but not sure if I have your current e-mail addy, I haven't mailed yet so thankyou for your patience. I have been finding it hard to move lately, old age I think. hope to mail before christmas.:) sorry to be so late. hugs carol

carol, my kind of canning! my garden was somewhat of a bust this year as well. i got minimal for my efforts, but the minimal i got, i surely appreciated. the weather was crazy and spoiled quite a bit.

happy belated birthday dottie, sounds like a wonderful time. i too treated myself this last week to a great spa day, aside from all the typical stuff, i had a full body scrub. it was glorious. can't wait to do it again.

hey remy, are you still planning on comig out this way for your new store?

well, this is about all my computer can handle right now. still having problems. so i post when i can, which isn't too often.

hopefully my box, and anyone else falling behind, can get to september's soon.

    be well...enjoy this beautiful weather!!!!!

    Happy Belated Birthday, Dottie!
I know we miss wishing people a Happy Birthday from time to time and I always feel bad about it. How would everyone feel about it if on the last day of the month (like today), everyone who has a birthday the following month would simply type in "Birthday - and the date." Or is there someone who could receive them by e-mail at the end of each month for the following month and post them here? I know we have them in our membership list and they are even here on "My Page" but it's hard to remember. Usually I only notice if I have pulled up the member's My Page for some other reason within the week before the birthday.
Okay, just an idea. I know some groups desingnate someone to keep up with a birthday list. That's another option if someone wants to take on that task.
    My two cents worth...
    Everyone have a good day.

Happy belated birthday Dottie! Sounds like you had a really good one at the Hershey Spa. I am jealous.

I heard from Sue and she is in the same boat as I am for the September swap. We are still getting our boxes together. No hurry though Sue. Thanks for the update. :O)

I will let you know when I receive my August box Maryanne. Thanks for the update. Sorry to hear about your computer
problems. I know that can be very frustrating.

Carol, I am impressed with all of that canning you did. I wish I had the time to do some of that myself. But not that many jars. LOL...

Jeanne, I missed our Master Gardeners plant sale. It was this past Saturday and I didn't see it in the paper until after it was over. Oh well, I am now looking forward to the one they have in the spring.

Have a great rest of the week everyone!

    Hi All,
Long time no talk! Things have just been crazy busy here. I haven't had time to sit down and write anything. My great aunt died. She was 95, lived a good long life. My brother is getting married on Sat. After a few shopping excursions, I did find a dress, shoes, etc. I'm all set to go thank goodness. Gary is not. We need to shop on Friday because he procrastinated!!

    Carol,
I'm sending your box out on Monday. My father does look good for 69, doesn't he? Your husband is nuts with canning. Gary canned some applesauce. I'm glad to here you've got tomatoes!

    Maryanne,
Congrats on the cottage! My father went on vacation from his time here to the cottage on Grand Island, lol. I tried to get to go out to you, but they weren't taking anyone from our store : ( Now that there are more stores closer, they don't want to pay for people traveling so far. I really wanted to go!!!

    Dottie,
Happy Belated Birthday! And since you say you are older than dirt, here's a card for you, lol.

What a great gift you got from your hubby. I don't remember reading anything about the massages when I was in Hersey. I would of had one!

    Melissa,
What a terrific gift your hubby gave you! I need to mention all these wonderful gifts to my Gary, maybe I'll get lucky.

    Treasa,
Did I read that right, Shetland Sheep? not the dogs? Wow! Well, maybe you'll need the dogs now that you got the sheep, lol.

    Jeanne,
I do the same thing for the plant sales here! You can't come home empty handed.

    Shirley,
What a lucky granddaughter you have! I always liked going shopping with my grandmother too. Geeze, that was back in the day of going downtown to the big dept. stores, no malls back then.

    Have a good night everyone,
    Remy

Thanks for the BD greetings, everyone. Remy, loved the card tee hee hee! It's true. And today I feel like it. I realllllllly overdid it in the garden yesterday. Made two new bed areas and moved a bunch of things around. Even dug a ditch to try to drain some of the water in our "retention basin". Not sure if it worked. Then I had to drag a bunch of potted (BIG!) plants inside because it was getting pretty cold last night. Learned that several of my avocado plants are too tall for the family room now! Yikes!

    Gotta get back to work.

Hi all...just checking in. This week has been SO busy. And today is my daughter's first field trip with school. I am a chaperone (of course). We are going to an apple orchard/pumpkin patch. It is going to be such fun...I just hope the rain holds out.

    Talk to you soon. Vina

Vina-What fun and something you will always treasure going on field trips with your daughter. I love all the little fall produce stands this time of year. They have such colorful gourds, pumpkins and squash. I received my wonderful box and want to thank you for such a nice box.

    I received from Vina:

    Fall Mum
    Lily Tiny Todd
    Lily Tiny Puppet
    Tulips Gavota
    Tulips Claudia
    Tulips Texas Flame
    Snow Crocus-Pickwick

I told my DD she would have to get a bulb of the Tiny Todd Lily for her DH's name is Todd. She said she wanted one of those. All the tulips are breathtaking and I so look forward to Tulips and Crocus blooming in early Spring. Thank you again Vina.

Dottie-Glad to hear your B-Day was so much fun. I love B-Days you remember for years down the road.

Frances-Your box will be going out today. Hope you like what I picked for you and they should do well in heat.

Carol-You have been a busy lady with all that canning. You will be glad you did it this winter when you go to eat all of it.

Dianne-Our Garden Club has a sale in the Spring but we don't do the Fall one not sure why. I always try to get there early for the best selections.

    Remy

    Hi all...just checking in.

Shirley, I'm so glad you have your box. I tried to mix it up, since I looked on your page and you have so many wonderful plants already. I tried for spring, summer, fall. I hope they bloom well for you!!

This was Taylor's first field trip. And wouldn't ya know it...rain! We went anyway and huddled in a large barn for the tour of all of the apple picking tractors and the bee keepers stuff they have. Then the clouds parted....some guys put burlap sacks over the wagon seats and we all headed out to a muddy apple orchard. The kids had such fun, stomping in mud and puddles...and we were only out there for about 20 minutes. But long enough for them to fill a bag of apples. We get back to the barn and the rain started again. We made it just in time. They even got to go and pick pumpkins from a warehouse barn behind the store, as they patch was WAY too muddy. I think the pumpkins were nicer anyway :0) I will never forget it...another treasured memory to keep.

Talk to you all soon! vina

    Hi All,

Vina, sent you an email in response to yours (finally got it!)
Your daughter is Taylor; one of my sons, who is 27 now, is also Taylor. Sounds like a very fun day.

Headed out to plant more bulbs.

    Dottie

hi everyone...this has to be quick. took forever to sign on. i really need to breakdown and buy a new computer soon. no sooner i sign on, the hour glass gets me and then goes away, appears again and stays. killing me, because during the day the internet is taboo at this job. drives me insane not to be able to peek into something once or twice a day - break up the boredom of work LOL

vina, i'll work on your box this weekend. sorry to be so late, life is a few months ahead of me of late. hopefully there will be no rain. i need to get all those bulbs jeanne sent me in the ground as well and do some fall clean-up before the crazy weather sets in.

i was so late getting out my august box. it was only just delivered last week. i can't find the august thread, so diane, if you are watching....

going back to read all the posts...be back later.

    Jessie's Song
1 unkown iris in a brown paper bag (no name attached)
2 different iris' wrapped in individual newspaper (no name attached)

Maryanne, Thank you so much!!! This was truly a surprise box! Can you help me name the ones that don't have a label? I am saving your letter...that will help me when they bloom. Any other info would be totally appreciated!

treasa, sorry to hear of your hospital stay. i certainly hope everything is okay and it was just a routine kind of thing! positive thoughts and prayers being sent your way.

vina, please don't think i'm that disorganized. sorry for some of that! LOL anyway NOID means NO ID (identification). we'll figure out the others when they bloom. hope they all do well for you - i just love iris and more that happy to share with someone that has developed such an appreciation for this particular flower.

this concludes our swap this month ladies, albeit late LOL. thanks for joining in.

    Hi Maryanne!
I was out planting today...too funny...NOID...NO ID (I should have figured that out, but I thought it was some kind of code???? Go figure?)

I'm hoping that they all do well...and I just can't thank you enough! I've been telling everyone about my new babies in the garden! :0)
