Mallika Mango!

Amazingly, today in Home Depot, they had mango trees from Pine Island. Only $33.98 for a Mallika mango tree. It was cheaper than when I went to PI in person and this way I didn't have to worry about shipping it to PR!

I am stoked and hope HD and PI have worked out a deal for more varieties to come our way.

That's fantastic! Congratulations. Did you talk to the management at your HD to find out if more are on the way?

No, actually, this was the HD closer to the city. I will check out my more local HD first, see if they can get some.

Nice find and you didn't have to drive clear across the island to get it.

    hope it likes rain,

I bought my malika mango tree from Home Depot as well back in August. I absolutely love it. Great disease resistance, great low latteral branching (condo mango), fast grower, but the main reason why why I added this to my collection was its very unique taste. Tastes like no other mango in my opinion with hints of papaya in it!

I had a Mallika tree before I sold my house in Coconut Creek in 2007, and I didn't follow the "rule" of picking the fruit unripe and letting it ripen off the tree. I picked them when they had their full color but were still firm, and I thought they tasted just fine.

At my house I also do not follow the conventional wisdom of picking them green (never mind ripening them in camel dung). They are not good when they are overripe, but I too have found no problem with the flavor when tree ripened.

Harry, that's odd. On our tree every Mallika that was left on and had started to get a color blush had ovipary (seed sprouting inside of the mango). These mangos tasted like fermented grape soda. This happened on the first 1/2 of the tree that started to ripen. The 2nd half of the tree we picked early and let ripen in the kitchen and they were superb. I wonder if we have a different type of Mallika than yours...

    Best regards,

What Dr Campbell said was that they "taste like gym socks" when not properly ripened :-).

With all due respect to Dr. Campbell......if his gym socks taste like my Mallikas ripened on the tree, I'd like to order a case of his gym socks. I'm not sure why I haven't exeprienced this phenomenon. Maybe I just like the taste of gym socks!

HAHAHAHA :-) does it develop that flavor when overripe? I can't comment much on it, but the one that I had from the ground at fruit and spice park was delicious.

And, now that I think about it......it scares me a bit to think that Dr. Campbell even knows what gym socks taste like. :->

Jeff...did you see any wayward camels (recently relieved, of course) wandering around near where you found that mallika on the ground that tasted good?

    HAHAHAHAH I hope not :-).

Dr Campbell also mentioned that he drinks his carries and eats his NDM green.

Has anybody ever had the dasheri? One interesting thing that I noticed about the dasheri was that the sap has a sweet smell, similar in some respects to the sap of the coco cream and lemon zest.
