european nightcrawlers are Eisenia hortensis, related to what's commonly called redworms, Eisenia fetida - they seem to work in bins, the main difference being that the hortensis will do well in your lawn or garden, where the fetida needs much richer feed and only does really well in compost

the Canadian nightcrawler is a different critter, sometimes called "dew worms", they're Lumbricus terrestris, don't work in composting
