It shouldn't be offensive to them. However, I would probably take them out now, if they haven't gone near it.

Add some more dry bedding, and put some regular food in, so they have something to eat.

When adding something you've never given them before, it's usually good practice to put a small amount in one corner to see if they like it.

I have added a small amount of shredded cardboard to the beets. I'm trying to come up with a "deadline" for removing the food.

I wish I would've had your advice before I added the beets! Next time I add something new, I will definately add a small amount. I am not looking forward to removing the slimy, brightly colored mass of goo.

Patience :) The beets peelings will break down. Just keep them buried or covered and forget about it. I find that in general root vegetables usually takes a little longer.

You didn't state how big your bin was, but I wouldn't remove it. They'll break down after a while, as almost everything does. I've got a larger flow through bin, so if something takes 3 months to break down, I'm not concerned.

Tango, thanks for the words of encouragement. I just wasn't sure if the cooked beets would make the bin anaerobic (sp?). I've also heard that root vegetables take longer to break down, but even when they're cooked?

Mndtrp, I have a Worm factory. I don't know the exact size, but it's not very big. The beets are in the 2nd tray, so even if the top tray went "sour", do you think the worms would just escape to the lower tray?
