Cass, after hours of harvesting my bin for the first time, I'm looking for any options to my "scoop and sift" method. Are you letting the worms migrate through the screen like Kelly suggests? Is this a rubbermaid bin or something bigger?

Shen: Yup I'm hoping they will migrate and yes It's a rubbermaid bin. Do you want me to keep you posted? I know worms can go thru screen because my old false bottom was screen and when I removed it there were a couple of worms half-way thru. The screen I put in this time is an old one that I took off one of my windows so I could put new screen up. The cat had scratched some pretty major holes in it so I thought that would be a help to the bigger worms:)

I've read that the side to side method(no screen just feeding off to one side) takes a few months to work so I would expect the same to be true for the screen. I like the screen because rather than saying x time you're looking at bedding conditions.

Kelly is good that way she gets you to look at conditions rather than specific numbers. It's really helped me realize that this is really not a complicated thing:)

Experiment News:I saw a worm in the experiment bucket yeasterday!!! I turned on the light in the kitchen and it dove for cover. Also I noted today that it looks like the soil surface has dropped quite a bit since the begining of the experiment.

I noticed in my bin this weekend that the soil has dropped several inches. I guess the little fellows are dooing their jobs! haha
