Vermicomposting

Outside and inground question

So...this is my first time :) I've been lurking alot ;)

I decided to try the hole in the ground method to start with. See how I do, and then graduate to actually starting a "real" bin.

So, my question is...if I just dig a hole in the ground, do I need to add bedding like you would for a normal bin? Or do I just start adding food scraps and such?

Yes you need bedding. Red Worms are not soil dwellers.

Might ought to think about that hole filling up with water when it rains also. Just get an old freezer and use it.

Thanks ya'll! I wasn't sure if Dirt counted as bedding or not ;) I'll go toss some stuff in before I go to work!

I'm not worried about the rain getting to it. It would take a torrent to be able to get water in there. I put an oversized lid on it to help with that, but mostly its just in a odd place where the shed, house or AC unit block most of the rain from that space.
