Climbing vinca/periwinkle?

Has anyone ever heard of vinca (major or minor) being used as a climber? I have a large blank stone wall and I'm looking for a traditional looking vine for a sort of criss-cross espalier pattern. I would train it onto wires along the wall. Can vinca do this, or is it strictly limited to groundcover? Does it need constant contact with soil? If vinca doesn't work I'll probably use climbing hydrangea--I'm looking for something with dark green leaves and unobstrusive or nonexistant flowers, that isn't English ivy.
