Hi Mary and All; It is true that medicated horse droppings are not safe for worms. It will kill them the same as it does the targeted worms.

It can be made safe by composting it past the heating stage by turning and watering it until it heats no more. It will then be safe for the worms you are feeding.

Hi Mary, Yes we compost ours too. We also have the schedule of when the horses will be wormed. We stockpile and compost it until they get wormed, then we wait a month before we collect anymore. It's probably overkill but we figure, why take the chance!

2000 is a good start for the GWF. I began with about 1700 worms and then got so impatient, added another 1000 within a month. :-) Just be sure that you start the bedding and food decomposition about a week before you add the first batch of worms. You want the bedding moist, and the microbes available when the worms first arrive.
