I am an apartment dweller vegetarian, and my primary reasoning for putting together a worm bin was to reduce the amount of vegetable waste I put into the municiple garbage bins/landfill. I just seems such a waste to take all the organic trimmings and apple cores and throw it all out. And I do have my parents garden to put the castings into when the worms have done their work.

I bought a small worm bin, the kind with aeration pipes in the bottom, and a pound of red worms. It has been set up for a month, and I have been putting 3 to 5 pounds of vegie scraps a week in, along with the husks from green coconuts, and some oak leaves and shredded newspaper.

So far, the worms seem to be multiplying and getting happy, big and fat!! There is lots of moist brown casting mixed in with the moldering vegies and paper.

It all seems to be going as planned, except that the bin is getting VERY FULL, I have found that we generate way more than 5 pounds of vegie waste a week, I could feed 2 or 3 bins full of worms. But my husband has said ONLY ONE....So at some point soon I will have to stop feeding them and let it turn completely to compost, and then what will I do with my kitchen scraps??

Also , I have notice that most people, even those who garden, are grossed out by the worms. Now I don't even mention them to visitors, at first I was all, let me show you my recycling worms!! I love my worms, I talk to them when I feed them and tell them to get fat and happy! Maybe I need a 12 step worm support group....
