Your materials aren't nearly composted if that pic is accurately showing them. Fully composted worm bin materials should have no recognizable bits and pieces of...matter (newspaper, foodstuff, etc).

That said, you can still utilize it as an amendment (think putting a handful of it under each tomato plant)

Course, they'll be some worms, and cocoons among it and if your weather is as described, what's the rush?

Thanks! The main rush is that my tomato plants are growing too big, and need to get in the ground. I do have the water-walls that will allow me to plant out soon, since the seedlings are taking over my kitchen! Most are already in large pots, so I can't just pot up.

The handful under each plant is what I was thinking--digging any worms out, but I don't know how to identify cocoons. I have seen baby worms. Also would dig out too much extra paper.

Then, should I just leave the rest in and keep with adding kitchen scraps only? Do I need to add more paper/cardboard?

Nah...don't add anything else for awhile. Worms can and will feed quite happily on foodstuff that you and I can't even see in there.

Cocoons look like little elongated brown seeds but you can see they're kinda translucent. Treat them with the respect they deserve.

BTW....see that little teeny tiny little white thing between my thumb and finger there? That's an EF. A composting worm about a few hours old.

Thank you very much! I have seen those little baby worms (and my 4 year old daughter is in love with her pet worms). I appreciate the advice on not adding more bedding--I have tried to do some searching through older posts, but it's difficult and time consuming. I'll keep an eye out so I learn to identify the cocoons.
