Help!

We recently discovered a very invasive vine in our yard at our new house now that spring has sprung. We saw the remnants of its damage from last year scaling a half dead tree and a fence. When we saw the leaves sprouting from the ground, my husband started pulling it up and followed the vines underground until we discovered the host plant about 15 feet away! It is a small bush with long chutes sprouting up 4 to 5 feet high. The chutes near the bush are thick, hollow, red and have hair like spines or thorns. Once they get long enough and the ends reach the ground though, the vines go underground and sprout up other places then start climbing. We had a heck of a time digging up 4 or 5 of the plants yesterday. I'd really love to know what this stuff is! Like I said, it's a new house so I don't know if it flowers or not (not as of yet). I found a website on weed vines and think it might be hedge bindweed but I couldn't be sure unless I could see the actual host plant. I haven't been able to find a picture though. Any help identifying it or ideas on how to control it would be greatly appreciated! It's in a very woodsy area that we're not going to try to maintain yet, I just don't want it interfering with the trees and our other shrubs or fence!
