Vermicomposting in Western KY

I am wanting to try my had at this but I am worried the weather here could be harmful. It gets 100 degrees here easily and the humidity is horrible! In the winter it can get really cold...just below or at freezing during the day and of course colder in the evenings. I don't really have anywhere inside to put my homemade box (hubby is going to make one!) unless I put it on a shelf in the laundry room but we already have an ant problem and I am a little nervous. We do have a great backyard with lots of shaded areas that never see the sun.I also have a garage that does not have the door on it so that also might be a doable place since it's cooler in there as well. Have any tips for making this work?!

Also...if I wanted to start a regular compost in our backyard using pallets on their sides in the shape of a triangle with one side opening...would I put the compost right on the ground or up a little so I can harvest and store the compost better? Oh, we live in the city but do have those pesky strays and other animals around...will I have a problem with them?

Hello W. KY neighbor. I'm also in West KY and have just recently started up a small vermicompositing bin. I was worried about the temperature problems here as far as summer goes, also. For the time being, I'm keeping my home-made bin inside in an out of the way corner of the kitchen. My only problem is that the worms haven't acclimated real well yet, and some have tried to escape.

Where are you planning on buying your worms from?

Well hello there! Where abouts in West KY are you? I am about 30 miles from Paducah. I haven't decided where to buy my worms from yet...actually I haven't done a lot of research on where to get them. Basically just trying to get the ins and outs of worming down before I dive all the way in! What kind of bin did you make? I was going to have my husband make me one from wood but I think for the time being I am going to try the plastic storage bins method! They seem to be working great for lots of people!

I'm in Central City. It's somewhere around 70 miles from Paducah.

My bin is a rubbermaid bin. So far, it's working really well. There is no bad odors coming from it. I am having some trouble getting all of the worms to stay in the bin, though. I added some more shredded newspaper to the bin recently to help with any excess moisture. The only thing that I'm having a lot of trouble with, is figuring out how much garden waste to add to the bin.
