very leggy clematis pruning

I have a nelly moser clematis that has been on the property I own for years. It was there way befoe I bought the house two years ago. It us now very top heavy with no foliage two feet above the ground. Can this be "started over" with heavy pruning or will It kill the plant? When should it be done?

nucci- I am only a beginner w/ clematis. If you go over to the Clematis forum, you will find lots of help! Yes, it can be pruned and it is considered to be good for the plant to prune it. Often this is done after it blooms- many will bloom again if pruned then, but let the experts over at Clematis forum help you w/ this. Brandy
