Hops vine not growing well

I bought 3 hops vines from a garden center and they were planted the last week of May. I have them in large planters with a trellis backing as we use them for privacy screens on one side of our property. They get some morning sun and some evening sun as they are the west side of our house (we face south).

Since they were planted I have noticed they have been getting brown leaves and some of the vines have turned yellow and died off. There is some new growth from the root along with some vines that are still "alive" but they look pretty sad, but I was told these plants were hardy and fast growers... I have yet be impressed with them.

Any suggestions?
