mites in compost aren't uncommon, but usually they indicate exposed wet decomposing organics - the majority are mold eaters, tho' some are parasitic on other compost critters - maybe you need to keep a cover of neutral bedding on the surface, like wet shredded paper

I've never noticed any mites in the worm bin [large/outdoor], but about everything shows up in the hot compost bin over time .... might just make sure your friend understands the fact that decomposition involves a whole world of critters most folks never think about :)

I haven't had any problems with mites in outside bins till I put a cup of chicken feed on top of the beds to get the worms on top good to see what I had. A week later I had red mites everywhere, mostly on the feed that was on top that was left. Once the feed on top dissapeared the mites also disappeared. I even dug around to make sure and they are gone.

Thanks for the response. I thought that it would not be a big deal. I tend to bury my feed and have learned to not over feed. Bill you answered my other concern, as I would like to continue to move up in my worm endeavors. That larger scale does not nessarly mean overpoulation of mites and such.
