Crepe Myrtle question

A co-worker went home Friday evening to find that someone or something had pushed over his 12 foot Dynamite Crepe Myrtle. He said that the trunk was snapped nearly through near the soil surface and wanted to know if there is anything he can do. I realize that most of the cambium layer is destroyed and the upper part of the tree will likely not survive. He plans to try to duct tape the trunk (only in Texas, right?) and stake it to see if it will live. Do you think that there is any hope? I advised that he just cut it down below the break and let it start over from the roots, but he really wants to maintain the size and not have to start over with it.

TIA,

Pam
