double fertilzer

I planted my garden late this year - June 1st, last year I started May 5th. But anyway my question is: I just fertilized for the 1st time this week, I used Miracle-Gro Organic Choice All Purpose Plant Food which is 7-1-2 - its supposed to feed for 2 months. I having regrets on using this now, I wanted to try Alaska Morbloom Fertilizer 0-10-10 which supposed to be good to use when there are blooms on the plants. Is it ok if I added the Morbloom now after I just added the Miracle-Gro? Or would it burn the plants or some other damage? Thanks for the help.

    Hi Cablestarman,

The MG you added is pretty high in nitrogen in relationship to the phosphorus and potasium, and the Alaska has no nitrogen listed.

I've seen many different ratios suggested for tomatoes, but what they have had in common is that the N is usually lower than the P & K, such as 5-10-10 or 3-4-6, or might be even with it like 10-10-10. As you may be aware, Nitrogen encourages leaf growth at the expense of blossoms and the fruit they produce, phosphorus helps with root developement and potasium is for overall health of the plant (I am ignoring the micro-nutrients which are also very important.) An easy way to remember what the N-P-K values help with is "Up-down-all around."

All that goes to support what I am going to say next. . . .

I think you can safely fertilize with the 0-10-10 after using the MG, especially since the "Organic Choice" implies it will be slower to release than some types of fertilizer. My personal recommendation would be to try half-strength or half-dosage and wait a week to see how they react, if you don't have any burning, etc., then apply the other half.

A lot of the available literature suggests feeding at transplant and then every 2-3 weeks. I prefer to transplant, allow the seedlings to adapt for at about a week, then feed with a balanced or lower in N organic plant food. I feed again about a month and two months after that and then they are on their own. (My garden has pretty good soil.) Sandy soil may need feeding more often, and heavy soil less so. It is a good idea to get a soil test so you know what you have before you start changing it.

    Hope that helps.

Do your plants look like they need more fertilizer? I haven't fertilized my tomato plants in over a month and a half, and they are doing fine, in fact the best they ever have. In fact I couldn't fertilize them even if I wanted to because even though I planted them four feet apart in rows six feet apart they have grown into a jungle and I can't even see the bases of the plants or soil anymore. I don't plan to fertilize them anymore this year as long as they look as healthy as they do right now.

Thanks Betsy for the info. The Alaska MorBloom is a liquid unlike the MG, its a fish emulsion. Is it ok to use this to foilage feed as well?

Actually, I'm not an expert on this but the plants look very healthy to me at least - planted on June 1st. The Mortgage Lifters look good, I also have some Sweet Olive, and Tommy Toes. The Tommy Toes look the worst and that could be because I ordered them on the web. I could take some pictures if that would help? It doesn't seem like they have as many blooms as they should though. I could just be a little impatient.

I'd go for it. Add all the #s together and it still doesn't add up to what I use monthly.

I'm using Neptune's Harvest (it's the fish + seaweed blend, but close enough I think to your fish emulsion) and foliage-feed the plants with it. I only have a few plants so a big sprayer was more than I needed - I just mix the stuff up in my watering can and then give the plant a good sprinkle.

I suggest doing it in the morning to give the leaves plenty of time to dry off. My plants are LOVING this stuff...the only drawback is the smell.

I used tomato tone in my earthbox but growth wasn't great this year. I forgot to put perlite in my potting mix which was that heavy miracle grow organic mix. Anyway I gave it a dose of great big tomatoes compost and fish emulsion last week and they've grown by a third in a week and tons of flowering. Doesn't seem to be any damage done. I'll see how they are growing and either do a little every 2 weeks or once a month.
