I think a small bin would be harder to manage than a bigger one. You would have to be careful not to over feed and watch it doesn't get too wet. Otherwise it should be ok. It will be a good test of patients.

Russ, I did what you did, 30 red worms from a bait shop, newspapers, ground coffee but used an old plastic bucket. I feed them every 3 days and moisten the newspaper bedding using a spray bottle.

It's been 6 wks now and though I haven't counted them, I have actually seen small beige wrigglers which I think (& hope) are their babies. I usually place food in different spots and now find that these small amounts do "disappear" and they just seem to move to the next mini food-pile.

I'm now unsure if they are my pets or my compost manufacturing assistants.

I've fed them tealeaves, ground coffee, bits of carrots, broccoli, leftover raw veggies all chopped up finely. But I've heard that they don't like onions & potatoes, not sure if that's true or not but I won't risk it right now.

BTW, I took advice on this site, placed a wet pc of 3-tier brown box cardboard as the base-layer & those guys actually ate through it, so they must like it :)
