You've been posting a new topic on average once a day for the last three weeks, and most of your questions have been addressed extensively in the archived discussions. In my experience, over population is not a major worry. When the season gets cold (for outdoor bins), some worms will die off and the next generation of cocoons will come around when things warm up again. I dont know how cold cocoons can take it. Some outdoor bins do well this way...other things conrtribute though Im sure. I also dont go for just castings when I harvest. I use the vermicompost as a whole...so I know that I put a few worms in my ground soil as well as my potted plants' soil. Certainly does not hurt...occasionally I find worms in my potted plants. I think that its more of a benefit...but thats just my theory.

To give you a bit of a perspective, my bin is in an 18 gallon tote (inside). Ive not had any population issues though and its been quite a while since I started with 1lb of worms. I find babies all the time.

im using i would say 10gal cooler started with about 20 worms. no cocoons. i do not plan on releasing mine into the ground mainly because out garden is NOT worm friendly. no one waters the garden thus the worms would just die. i was just planning on seeing what happens and make bigger bins until i get too much then i will give my worms away to someone who wants to start a bin.

i am not worried about over population atm but when it gets to the point i have too many then i might be as we got nothing to use the worms for besides composting
