It depends on how much you have overfed, what the smell is like, and how strong the smell is. Odds are if you leave it alone, it will be fine in a day or two. Just let the worms catch up.

But...

If the smell is very strong, or it smells like sewerage or ammonia, or is heating up, you may need to remove some food. I'm not sure what you should do with a bunch of rotting food scraps, though. Feed them to your worms?

My bin smells kinda funky right now, but what would you expect a bunch of ground up over-the-hill broccoli to smell like? I'll just let the worms catch up.

Just like sbryce said, see if the smell dissipates in a couple of days. Unless you have a strong ammonia smell....that would indicate your bin is anearobic and then as much as possible should be removed.

When I feed my lads a lot of greens my bins stinks for a day or two. Especially kale. Hubby always knows (and comments) when I feed them kale. I get produce from the grocery store and they have lots of lettuces, kale, herbs etc that they give freely.

Just to clarify...

A sewerage smell is anaerobic. Am ammonia smell is too much nitrogen. At least that is my understanding.

The bin doesn't smell like ammonia, instead it has a strong smell of over-ripe celery (if that makes sense). I've stopped putting any scraps in the bin until the worms catch up, and the smell has quickly begun to dissipate.

As a side note, I had a container of finished castings that I knew had cocoons still in it. Yesterday, my daughter and I spread the castings out and found somewhere around 150 babies crawling around in there. I don't know which was more fulfilling, the abundance of babies or seeing my daughter get so excited over the babies.
