Looks like kudzu to me. Didn't think kudzu is hardy in maine. For your sake, I hope it is not.

I have the same thing here, 2 species as a matter of fact. Or one mighty variable species. The flower is very similar to vetch, and the seeds are in several small pods, like vetch. Whatever it is, it is certainly a legume.

This species is Amphicarpa bracteata. It is a bean and quite harmless. There are many vining beans with leaves that look somewhat similar but Amphicarpa is the most common. Poison Ivy will never be as thin and herbaceous as Amphicarpa, it is a more stout plant.

Are the stems sort of grayish and not stout? It looks like something that has invaded my garden the last couple years.

nope, not poison ivy....poison ivy has reddish colored new growth and the vine itself is quite grotesque looking ..i am not sure what exactly your vine is, but it is quite attractive!...here is a pic of poison ivy growing on my shed.

If you have poison ivy, how do you get rid of it?

Darn it, all I could see is the dreaded red X, I've seen pictures of poison ivy, but when I get out in the woods I'm not so sure I can identify it. Therefore, to me, all 3 leaved vines are poison ivy.

Once you have been a victim of poison ivy, you definitely learn to recognize it. It pops up around here frequently. It has three leaves together that are ruffly and pointed. Most of the time it is small when I see it, and can even turn up in a flower pot. One easy way to get rid of it is to spray with weed killer and leave it to die. If you leave it over the winter it will decompose. I get my husband to dig it out after it is dead (he doesn't touch it) and put it in a plastic bag to throw away. If I ever think I have gotten into some, I wash the area immediately with dishwashing soap. If you ever get a case of it, bleach water will dry it up.

It's a wild bean. The native Americans did use the seeds. But you would have to be very diligent to get enough to actually use!
