Hmmm...I don't know, but fair warning - all bamboos and grasses have a very high silica content that can be very hard on your teeth (this is actual silica in the plant, not something that can be washed off). That's why our herbivorous cousins the robust australopithecines had such enormous teeth!

There may be exceptions to the rule, so most are edible. Some varieties of bamboo have to be cooked first to remove the poisons, but I think that may be more tropical varieties.
A lot of the phyllostachys species people eat raw, but some species need cooked to remove their bitterness. So in conclusion, if you don't know what kind of bamboo you have, cook it to be on the safe side. I would assume that arundinaria gigantea could be native where your at and if its not a native bamboo, then check with phyllostachys aureosulcata because that one is one of the commonest ones in midwest.
