You can also control these by pulling the plants before they seed, that's what I do because I have a creek in the backyard and don't want to poison the fish. It works reasonable well but you never get complete control because the birds keep bringing it back.

Also, they will "return" because of the as yet unsprouted seeds in & on the soil.

Even so, you make progress if you pull and discard each one you see. It's a imperative to do so before they set seed!
