Strange worm!?!?

Newbie here...

Anyway, today after the 8th day in a row of rain, I checked on the garden after a heavy downpour. On top of the weed block, i saw what looked exactly like the root of a tomato seedling. About 4 inches long and as thin as a root, and it was swaying in the breeze. As i looked closer, it was really moving by itself and not because of the wind. I picked it up and placed it in my palm, and the thing curlled into a knot. Freaked me out.

Anyone have any experience with something like this? The plants seem to be doing fine in spite of the conditions. A few curled stems, but nothing that looks unusual.
