Slider I think in my fenced back yard

I went to check what my dogs were barking at this morning and it was a turtle, not a box turtle. It's flattish. I think it's a slider but it's being shy won't stick it's head out.

I thought those stayed close to water and we're quite a ways from the nearest pond. Does anyone know how far they wander?

I brought it in to rescue it from the dogs but not sure whether to deliver it to a pond somewhere or just put it back out in the yard outside the fence.

How close does it need to be to water?

i don't know anything about sliders but if it were in my yard, i would just put it back outside the fence and let it go on its way.
but hmmm- if you gave it some fruits and veggies to munch on, it might stick around. maybe you could take it a little ways away from your property, give it a snack and leave it to continue wherever it was going. -tough world out there.

I didn't think to check there Lisa. I was worried about keeping it inside too long and went ahead and put it back out but not inside the fence where the dogs are.
It's really hard to wade through the info on the web about sliders because so much of it is for people keeping them as pets and of course this one wasn't a pet. I found several places that said they will wander quite a distance from a water source but none that said specifically how far.

It was a red eared slider by the way which is fairly common in Missouri I believe.
