The single most bestest way to control "weed" growth is to cover them with a barrier that prevents them from getting access to sunlight and then they die and return to your soil the nutrients they removed from that soil to grow. Tilling soil brings "weed" seeds that have been buried to the surface where they have access to sunlight and moisture that helps them germinate and grow.
Plant your plants you wish and then cover the soil with a good, thick mulch to keep those "weeds" from getting the sunlight they need to grow. Newspaper, or cardboard, can be of help if you do not have enough mulch material to do that.
