It's the pupae of one of the many sphinx moths. They are also called hawk moths, hummingbird moths, and the caterpillars are all hornworms. I can't tell you which one, for certain, as there are several that have that 'hook' on the front.

Believe it or not, that odd appendage is what is housing the proboscis of the moth ...the long tube they unwind to sip nectar. It's the mouthpart of this moth, rather than the tail!

You can see the wings forming, if you look. See those little holes along the side, in every body segment? Those are the spiracles, part of the breathing apparatus of insects.
