Acalypha of some kind.

I appreciate the response, but this plant is less than a foot tall and Acalypha appear to be mostly shrub like. In addition, Acalypha are tropical and subtropical, I'm in temperate NJ.

I have seen a very similar plant around here, and if I really wanted to know what it is I would take some into my local office of the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Service for ID. I will agree it is not one of the Acalypha although the USDA Plant Profile has one of them at least as common in your area of the world.

According to IPNI genus Acalypha includes more than 700 species. Some are big, like A.hispida, A.wilkesiana...
Small and similar to yours which come to mind:
Acalypha indica, A.australis, A.rhomboidea
Search images for these species and compare with your plant.
Or -- post better pictures, including closeup views of what is at the base of the leaves.

I don't have a clue what your plant is however A. virginca grows in New England in dry soils of woods and ranges in size from 6" to 2'.
