dove bird seed mix-will it grow?

Hi, another dove seedd question from a Newbie......

If I took some of the dove bird seed mix that we buy from a local pet shop by the lb. & gently pressed these seeds into the soil in a small patch off to the side of our garden, would these seeds actually grow? Would I be able to harvest some seeds in the future to feed our doves as well as leaving some for the wild doves to eat?

I have tried starting the millet that you buy on rods but it never emerged. What you can do is put some of the seed on a wet paper towel placed in a baggy or covered container to see if it sprouts.

Some of the things that are sold as bird seed have been treated so they will not grow such as what is sold as niger seed. Perhaps someone will know of a symbol that is placed on packages that have been treated.
