You just gave me a great idea.

I want a hedge alone one side of the property line, but have hesitated because that is a main area where the snow gets blown in winter. After a year like this past winter, a woody hedge would probably get damaged, but with peonies, it wouldn't matter. I know as a kid my mother's peony was typically buried under 5 feet of snow and came back faithfully every year.

Growing smaller clematis through them would give a floral display later on as well. Woah, you got my mind working in high gear now.

I was thinking of it for a hedge plant too. Not next to my driveway, but on my front yard west property line.

I watched her build this lot line bed by killing the grass, then hauling in soil for a raised bed, then planting the small plants. The second year she caged them and laid down mulch, and this third year they are astonishing.

Your thoughts for a hedge along the driveway sounds so sensible. I mean, they get cut down anyway. Nothing to harm. I guess my only worry would be salt. I would guess you could do the same with some of the 'wild' rose species.
Only, they dont maintain the great green leaves all year, and the same height to look like a hedge.

Well, you've got me thinking towards this fall. I have to rethink how much I want to put into this home that I am thinking of selling.

I had thought of roses, but I have some on the side of my house that I planted because of the neighbor kids and their basket ball. I love roses when they are in bloom, but when they finish blooming, ugh.

I forgot about the salt thing. We had to use a lot of ice melt in late winter. Once the salt shortage hit, the only salt available was the expensive earth-friendly stuff. It isn't suppose to harm plants and I thought it worked faster and better.
